Daniel Detox: Day #1

My husband got a job today (YAY!) and we are celebrating by doing the Daniel Detox!!! We are done with Day #1. It was a deliciously successful day!!! We also escaped the temptation of the Bible Study snack! 40 days to a more holistic lifestyle!

So, what is the Daniel Detox? It’s part of the Daniel Plan but maybe slightly more rigid with the foods it eliminates. It eliminates dairy, gluten, and sugar for 40 days — yes 40! I know there are countless “diets” out there but the basic principles are mostly similar and I chose to do this one because first of all, it was NOT just about food.

It talked about 5 essential areas of life and how they are interdependent on each other: Faith, Food, Fitness, Focus, and Friends. You need God’s help; you need to exercise; you need to eat right; you need to refocus your brain (eliminate stress/negative thoughts); you need friends’ support! And all this works together to create a holistic lifestyle. Read the book if you can! I just checked it out of the library! :)

Another reason I chose this plan was because in the book, they included a 10-day meal plan (one for the daniel plan and one for the daniel detox) with a complete shopping list and recipes! I have tried to eat healthy before and I don’t have any problem EATING healthy food. My problem is SHOPPING and MAKING healthy meals. With the meal plans and shopping lists in the book, my battle is half won!

We did a shopping blitz: 3 stores, 3 hours and spent about $150 so far. I don’t think we will use up all the ingredients in 10 days because most of the recipes say it serves 3-4. Also, for the first 10 days, I stuck to the shopping list pretty closely but I think after these 10 days, I will figure out if I can make any substitutions to suit our taste preferences or to cut costs. :)


Shopping for the first 10 days… I spent about $150. However, most of the recipes say it serves 3-4 so I’m hoping this will last a little longer. Also most of the condiments will last a lot longer too. I’m keeping track of how much I spend and we’ll see how much I spend at the end of 40 days.

What we ate…


Whole protein shake: walnuts, brazil nuts, hemp seeds, banana, blueberries, cashew butter, almond milk, coconut oil, and water. I could drink this all day!!! (It was meant to have chia seeds too but I didn’t have any yet.)


Lunch: Quinoa, vegetables and homemade dressing (garlic, coconut oil, apple cider vinegar, and a variety of herbs and spices)


Artichoke hummus dip with veggies for a snack! First time using my fancy attachment for my handheld blender. :)


Ok, this recipe is definitely a KEEPER no matter what! You know it’s a good recipe when you think about serving it to guests! Walnut Pesto Chicken with white beans, peppers, and balsamic vinegar dressing

Reflection so far…

The first thing I will say is… the food tasted GREAT! Not even exaggerating. Even my husband was excited about the meals and he said he knew the Walnut Pesto Chicken was a good recipe when he was even thinking about serving it to guests and that he would not have to apologize about how healthy it tasted! LOL!

I also did not have to take a nap yesterday. I’m not sure if I was just excited but I will be keeping track of my energy levels and blood pressure levels too.

Don’t worry, I won’t be posting EVERYDAY for FORTY days! I plan to just repeat the 10-day meal plan four times unless I have lots of free time to substitute recipes. So, I plan on posting for the first 10-days — if I can keep up with it. :)
